Lorna and I were already up and about early Saturday morning for our trip to Katy, Texas. We left shortly before 10AM for Katy taking freeways I-45 N and I-10 W. In less than an hour, we arrived at Pastor Butch Ramirez’s residence just to discover that nobody was home.

Anyway, I called him by cell phone to find out that he was at the Houston Trinity UMC preparing for the Easter Sunrise Service. In less than 10 minutes, he was waving at us from his place when we were coming back from a stroll, stretching/limbering our legs and bodies from the not too long a trip from Houston to Katy.

Not too long from then, we found ourselves at the kitchen talking, drinking coffee, tea, eating home-made "suman" (rice cake), courtesy of Obed, their Filipino cook prepared by wife, Lerree whom Pastor calls “dahl”, maybe a shortcut of “darling”, hehe. We spent the rest of the afternoon at the church to have an ocular of the place where I would conduct my “Art Talk/Exhibit”. We then arranged the long tables and chairs for my art presentation.

Headed back home to print my message for Easter and didn’t have to eat dinner since we had several pieces of chicken at the church that late afternoon. Anyway, the next day Sunday, we left their residence by 5:30AM for the Easter Sunrise Service at Houston Trinity United Methodist Church.

Before I knew it, I had already delivered my message and conducted my “Art Talk/Exhibit”. It was a fun Easter day spent with a majority of Filipino congregation and a few Americans. We stayed around at church until 4PM just chatting with a few friends and headed back home to Houston.

Today, I decided to visit Toyota, Houston along Gulf Freeway-I 45 to get the next free service for the Matrix. It was going to take about an hour so I made use of my time inquiring about a possible trade in for a better vehicle for our needs. Lorna and I have recently been toying with this idea for our safety since Matrix is one of Toyota’s recalls.

Also, we had moved twice from Garland, Weatherford and now Houston just to learn that the Matrix is really too small and unsafe a vehicle to carry our things around. Short time notice for Lorna’s work transfers made us give away a lot of our things including food and groceries. Therefore, we had to find the next bigger and safer car that’s just about the same price as the Matrix or a little more.

Chris Madison of Toyota took time to show me the possible vehicles suited for our needs. Got to drive several Toyota pick-ups, cruisers and SUVs. After a while, I thought, the four-seater pick-up would be ideal for our needs since we only need seats for two passengers and a big space behind for our things.

After work, I brought Lorna to Toyota and again had an ocular of the vehicles to choose from. The three of us agreed that RAV4 is just about the right vehicle for our needs. It’s in between a pick-up and a car that makes us feel comfortable using it both for practical and aesthetic uses. There’s enough room for our basic things and a little more extra since the spare tire is placed outside the vehicle. Matrix’s towing capacity is 850 lbs, RAV4’s is 1,500 lbs.

Also, that day was the last day to avail of the zero interest / APR from Toyota. RAV4 2010 carries the “J” VIN which means that all the parts are manufactured in Japan and are not part of any Toyota recalls. It will also be a stop production for Matrix come 2011 so resale value is predicted to be low.

That same day, to our surprise, we drove home with the RAV4 instead of the Matrix. Lorna still misses the Matrix, but like most anything we love, sometimes we have to say goodbye.

Pastor Butch Ramirez of the Houston Trinity United Methodist Church invited me to speak again for the April 18, 2010 10:30AM Service after he learned that the the manuscript I had for the April 4 (Easter Sunrise Service / 6AM) was not at all sourced nor read by me since my message turned out to be more extemporaneous than verbatim.

But, again, I couldn't help but just eyeball speak to the congregation for whenever I tried reading from my prepared manuscript, I felt distanced from the congregation, enough to make me feel that I would lose contact with them.

So, although nothing of my previous message was repeated, I started and ended delivering an extemporaneous message, again. This brought laughter both to me and Pastor Butch Ramirez when I got seated with him after my message that morning.

So, Pastor Ramirez hinted that perhaps the best I can do for any next message I will have to deliver would just to have outlined "cues" just to guide me in making an extemporaneous speech. Well, I guess this is what I will do the next time I am asked to give a message for my future audience.

I found out one thing though - - that is, that I do enjoy communicating my thoughts to an audience especially when it comes to sharing with them my experiences as an artist in the past and recent years that I have been in solitude.

After the morning service, we stayed on at the church for breakfast and interacted with the young and adult members of Houston Trinity UMC. After a while, Lorna asked me to drive her to Costco for shopping.

By 4pm we were done with Costco and proceeded to Pastor Butch and Lerree's place for our UHS reunion. The photos below are a few that Lorna and I have taken using my Motorola Droid cell phone. I took a lot of videos too and may upload them as soon as I am able to.

Again, I thank the Ramirez family and Houston Trinity UMC and my high school mates for making April 18, 2010 a very memorable and enjoyable Sunday. On our way home a strong rain kept us entertained via freeways I-10 and I-45. In less than an hour Lorna and I were home, safe. Thank you Lord for that blessed day spent on the other, western side of Houston, Texas!

It was my first week having stepped onto US soil (May '09) when I visited with RodS - - and he sure was a good host, bringing me around Burbank, CA to finally have lunch at IKEA. I had uploaded a few photos at Multiply then (I think) when I was with RodS, VicsM and Commissioner Zen . . if I find the photo albums, I will send the link to Banggaan.

I must confess I enjoyed playing your Gibson guitar - - which you restored? Your skills in video taking/editing too have improved greatly.

Btw, I had recently visited most of the art galleries in the Houston area especially at the "galleria" and a few more museums around Rice area and had met with their owners who I find to be very accommodating. Somehow, I had only seen a few red dots indicating less sales perhaps because of the present recession US is experiencing. I recently realized that the art gallery atmosphere is not really for me. Somehow I sense a cold, commercial atmosphere that really doesn't appeal to me. When I find the time, I will upload a few photos I took with my Motorola Droid cellphone which I find more convenient and less offensive to use than my G7. . . .

Perhaps, I will just continue sharing my artworks to people (who are non-art buyers) in libraries, art schools and churches by conducting art talks, possibly art classes to get the younger generation actively involve in art making for them to perhaps teach later. I may soon do this at a church in Bellaire, TX (about 30mins from Pearland). At present, I prefer to keep my artworks (to be exhibited at Glenn'Studio) while accepting a few requests to give in to their preferences. I normally receive gifts although I don't expect anything in return. I realized that when I listen and share, people share back and give much more in their own creative way.

This is perhaps the reason why I now try to avoid making money with my artworks - - a happier way to go about my chosen vocation (I can't sell my originals either because of my visa status). Well, perhaps I can afford to do this because Lorna earns just enough to take care of our needs both here in the US and Philippines and have been able, at times, to extend a little help to the rest of our families who need assistance.

In reality, we both work hard to earn the $, Lorna working as a PT (Mon-Fri) and me as her official "chauffeur", while I also do the laundry, press her scrubs, wash the dishes, sometimes cook for both of us - - many times for myself, hehe. Indeed, it is an honor to assist her for she deserves to get all the help she can get. Although not easy for Lorna to move to a different facility (different settings each time) every 3-6 months as a PT traveler, I find it quite appealing to me for I have had the chance to travel around Texas since I came in May 2009 in California. Pearland, TX is now our fourth assignment having spent quality time with people in Garland, Weatherford and Houston. Meeting with new friends just makes us happy. We used to sing a song that goes, "make new friends but keep the old - - one is silver and the other gold"

Our three-month stay in Houston allowed me to produce some nineteen (19) 18" x 24" pastels - - dealing with organic themes from images I casually see around in wild parks and gardens where butterflies and other insects feed on their natural food plants. While nothing can really equal God's creations, I can, at best, merely react to the beautiful things He created for all of us to perceive. Of course I do not copy what I see but do interpretative art from nature, much like writing a poem. Somehow because I do it this way, I do not feel any limitation expressing myself dealing with common objects from nature. I will upload some photos ( that have already accumulated) when I get the chance. Also, I will soon upload my Houston pastels at my (http://www.glennbautista.com/) site so you can view them. Garland and Weatherford TX pastels have already been uploaded. More Pearland TX pastels coming . . .

Perhaps, I will copy paste this letter to my Multiply site to later add related photos which I will share with Banggaan much later.

Lorna had to attend a two-day continuing education at the "Galleria" area in Houston, TX., an update for Physical Therapists.

Because of the distance between Pearland and Houston, instead of driving back home (freeways-30mins/side roads-1hr) I thought it a good idea to spend my 8Am to 5PM (before I pick Lorna up after the seminar) in Houston, visiting art galleries and other interesting shops. It turned out that I needed more time to get to see the interesting areas of Houston. I will soon add in this album other photos I took the next day (Sunday) but this time in the Bellaire area (20min drive) where I attended bible study, worshiped and rehearsed with the choir at Bellaire UMC.

Wednesday shortly after lunch, I was on the third floor working on my recent photos. Somehow faintly, I thought I heard my Motorola Droid cell phone ringing downstairs. I didn't realize that I left my cell phone in my blue bag downstairs since I came in that morning after bringing Lorna to West Broadway to her work.

The call log list indicated that Arch Romy Ballesteros had been calling me for the past hours without my knowledge. I think I did return his call or Romy called back again for us to finally agree to meet on that same day (yesterday / June 15, 2010) at our place here in Pearland, TX.

We agreed to meet at 6:30PM so we could spend more time with each other before we finally go to Lorna's work to invite her to eat dinner out. Romy and Rory came an hour early so we were able to spend more time chatting and I had the chance to briefly show them pastels I did in Texas since May 2009.

We then proceeded to Lorna's work and decided to use our RAV4 so we could be together maximizing conversation for the many years we did not see each other. After a few minutes of waiting, Lorna finally got out from work and was surprised to see Romy and Rory inside the car. Romy and I briefly chatted with Rody Picar before we proceeded to TJ Pinoy & Vietnamese Cuisine, less than 20 minutes from our place.

Perhaps it was five years ago that Romy and I last met at Onie's place near Makati together with the CAFAsingers and a few UP college mates. The only reason why I got connected with Romy was because of the line Romy once shared with us at Onie's place that went, "what's the color of your ass?" which Lorna, since then 'til now remembers and whoever said that, Lorna remembers, has been living in Houston, Texas.

I then wrote to as many CAFAsingers as I could to finally get Romy's contact infos from Sam Santamaria. We had planned, since then, to meet when we had the chance. I didn't realize that we are the first couple Romy and Rory met here in Texas who have to do with CAFA!

Below are a few photos Lorna and I took using my Motorola Droid cell phone at TJ Filipino Resto and at Starbucks. I will include more photos when I get the images Romy and Rory took using their digital camera.

Again, Romy, Rory . . many thanks for your thoughtfulness and visit. We hope to see you again. We did have fun having you around staying late @ Starbucks. Akala ko hinahabol kayo ng pulis, ninerbyos kasi si Rory noong nakita nya ang mga pulis sa labas, hehe. Btw, did you get lost getting out, hehe.

Thank you for sharing, Cecille.

Lorna and I also attended a Baptist church here in Pearland, TX yesterday. We enjoyed being with each member of this 99% African American congregation. They got the Christian spirit and response, the rhythm, warmth and the soul in just about everything they did during sharing and worship. Indeed, there never was a dull moment!

During his message, the pastor greeted us and thought we were Chinese, which I corrected rather lovingly, , hehe. I think, we will get more involved with this church because Lorna really enjoys being with the members. It is still a very small church that needs all the help it can get. Also, the closest UMC is still quite far from where we are and we couldn't find the two we tried to find that morning.

The worship service was indeed an experience. It was a Baptist church. It was in another slum area. God took me out of my box to experience a different way of worshiping Him. Although we cannot understand what they are singing, we can feel God's presence in the place. Indeed, God was glorified yesterday! The Pastor is associated with Campus Crusade ministry. He used to live an affluent life as a dentist but life was meaningless until he started to serve. The church grounds used to be a brewery. We did our first "Seeing the Light" ministry after church expecting 1,500 children but 2,500 came. More children than parents. Young children attending their infant or toddler sibling. We wonder where are the parents. Are they working on a Sunday trying to scrape off a minimum wage? Are they orphans? One girl with AIDS said her parents both died of AIDS. Susie Jennings presented the Gospel using the salvation bracelet with beads of different color: black for sin, red for the blood of Jesus, blue for baptism, white for purity, green for growth and yellow for the gold streets of heaven. The children accepted Christ! We gave each a bracelet and told them they belong to Jesus and remember Jesus loves them.

A pastor establishing the AWANA program was there. Fifteen pastors have been trained. He hopes to train 6 more pastors on the AWANA program and for each Pastor to train 5 more pastors after the completion of the program. AWANA is about discipling children to grow in Christ.

Today is Safari day, a day to enjoy The Creator and His creation. This is the time when the animals are migrating. It is winter in Kenya. Weather is great like our Spring weather! God is good all the time! Thank God for the sunshine! Asanti Bana! (Praise the Lord!). They have clay soil. It would have been so slippery and muddy had it been raining yesterday. The road to the slums are not paved. What a bumpy ride! Our driver said he was giving us a back massage.

Overpopulation in the Philippines

Dearest David,

The family sleeping inside the "kulambo" (mosquito net) is no different from how we were (3 brothers, 4 sisters) during your Lolo "Asyong's" early ministry with the Methodist Church. We moved from one province to another every 3, 6 to 8 years, each time not knowing which church and province your Lolo would be assigned to. We all had a taste of both the affluent and less fortunate church assignments and parsonages. Your lolo used to say, "magpakabait kayo ng husto kung hindi doon na naman tayo sa mahirap at maliit na bahay at simbahan mapupunta uli" (be good so that we don't get assigned to a poor, small church and parsonage again). We all grew up having our own roles to play for the community, church and family. No member of the family was spared from any chores and responsibilities.

Looking back, your Lola "Enyang" and Lolo "Asyong" have passed on to us something that we will always be grateful for, something money cannot buy and something we all can always rely on. Their Christ-like ways could only do us good, and that we can very well see, much more now that they have both crossed over to an everlasting life with Jesus.

Left Sunrise Village this morning at 9:45AM so as not to miss the 10AM Adult Bible Study class at the Shepherd of the Heart UMC here in Pearland, TX.

Yes we got there on time but was sorry to find out that the "KidStuf" program for this Sunday conflicted with the adult Bible study class (since parents would get involve with their kids) such that they had to cancel it for next Sunday. We only learned about this after Terry, the wife of Pastor Calder helped us find the adult class.

Since we did not have breakfast yet, we decided to get to the first open resto where we could eat, and it happened to be "Burger King". Since we were around somewhere Pearland Town Center, Lorna asked me if we could go to "Aeropostale" for her to get some additional shirts for her work. Unfortunately, it was also closed.

We decided to proceed to the church to join our fellow Wesleyans for the 11AM morning worship. Below are a few stolen shots I did with my Motorola Droid cell phone.

Pastor Wayne Calder's message, with his gentle African English accent, touched on the "Parable of the Sower". Lorna and I learned so much from insights shared by the pastor about sowing and reaping God's word. He said that after we have done our part in sharing God's work, we should learn to trust the Lord that He will do the rest. We look forward to next Sunday for the 10AM Bible Study class and worship at 11AM.

Watched the Bayanihan Philippine Dancers in awe - - through the courtesy of Benny Uy. Met there with Bangga-angels, VicsM and KomishZenL. Felt so fortunate to have witnessed this spectacle. Thanks Benny. Thanks Bayanihan. Thanks Zen . . and thanks to Mary who took care of us the whole time and of course to my new found fotog-friend, Chris.

Friends, both new and old are somehow there around exactly at the right time . . by whose design and timing, only God knows. I will always be thankful to new and old friends. The very casual family reunion started early afternoon, but I was not there with them for I opted to join Benny Uy to watch the Bayanihan Filipino Dance presentation in Orange County. There I met with VicsM, Chris and Commisioner Zen Lopez of Glendale, CA.

Really enjoyed watching the Bayanihan dancers and the late lunch I had with the Pinoy photographers at a Korean resto nearby. Not too long from then, Benny and I headed home in time to join the Bautista family reunion. We parted past midnight for we did not notice the time enjoying singing, eating and chatting. It was a reunion to remember. An amazing, colorful rainbow appeared in the sky during this memorable family reunion. Thank you, Lord.

Drove from Pearland to Houston, Edloe Drive, TX yesterday to bring Lorna to her PT continuing education class. Decided to visit with my UHS schoolmate not too far from Lorna's class so I drove to Wendell's place in Broadmead Drive, about 15 minutes away. The photos below show Wendell fixing his chopper before he attempted to fly it again that same afternoon.

Shortly before lunch yesterday (Monday), I got a call from Dick and Eunice from Galveston, TX inviting Lorna and myself to join them for dinner. Knowing that they drove for at least 5hrs from Garland to Galveston, TX, an excuse from me not to see them won't be acceptable, hehe . . for it only takes about an hour and a half to drive to Galveston from Pearland, TX via Beltway 8 and I-45S.

Texted Lorna who was working then to which she readily replied, "K". So, off we went after I picked her up from work, after a bit of coffee and rest at our place in Sunrise Lake. We left Pearland at 5pm and true enough, we were at the Silverlake Seaside gate by 6:30pm.

The photos below which Lorna and I alternately took will tell you the rest of the story. Perhaps, next time Eunice & Orly, Dick & Marylin will invite us again for a longer stay to perhaps enjoy fishing as well. Well, we got our fish without lifting a finger for Orly gave us enough fish to last for a week of "escabeche", etc . . . wow, thanks Orly, ang sarap ng itlog nitong mga isdang binigay mo!

Lorna was still resting from work so I decided to worship alone that Sunday at First United Methodist Church here in Pearland, TX.

Met with the "Disciples 2x2" Bible class at 9:20AM and we played Pictionary", a game where two teams would guess from sketches drawn on to the white board relating to Biblical characters, stories, etc. After the Bible class, Curt, Mike and Jess briefed me about the 2x2 Bible class and its activities. We will meet again come Saturday at 3PM at Curt's place, not too far from Sunrise Lake Village where Lorna and I stay.

After the Bible class, I joined the 10:30AM worship contemporary service where much singing with the band was done, with an amazing group of singers involving the congregation composed of the very young, young adults and the seniors. The photos below indicate what happened that Sunday morning. I have more CP candid photos to share but will upload them much later.

I called telling him I was on my way to Clear Creek Golf Club and ready to play although it was extremely cold (40F), windy and raining. Somehow, he ignored and did not mention anything about his email postponing the game but agreed to meet me for golf at 9AM as previously agreed.

We got to the Golf Creek Golf Club parking area at the same time, registered and began to play by 9:20AM without Chris. He couldn't make it for he had to work that Friday.

Raining and chilly, a bit windy at first, but turned out to be a fine day for golf, for both of us. The sun was a bit up, at the back nine. What a day for golf, one game Curt and I really enjoyed! So, Chris . . don't miss our game next time, ok?

(Dec 21, 2010) Just came in from Houston, TX to Thornton, Colorado for a 12-day vacation with my wife, Lorna to visit with Joy, Tere and Jon who now work and live here in Colorado. The first thing I did was to have Joy's extra car laser car washed. Since I then had my Motorola Droid CP with me, I thought of making a spontaneous video, myself being trapped for a few minutes inside the JEEP getting a carwash. Also, I drove around the area to find a possible place where we may stay if ever Lorna gets her wish to be reassigned here in Colorado where she will be in the company of her former PT college-mates.

Video by Glenn Bautista: A ten-minute video excerpt from a one-hour documentation of a drama of sacrifice exemplified by two ants making their frail bodies as bridges for the rest of the other ants going about their chores for the day. Handheld, I couldn't keep up videographing with the patience and determination of these two ants who after performing their roles were brought up by a sympathizer ant via the tiny twig, perhaps to rest, to again perform the same task for the next days to come. I caught this particular scene at the start of this video after the first ant performed the sacrificial task for 30 minutes . . a touching experience, I must admit. Do test your patience too by finishing watching this incredible feat of two ants hanging on to a twig despite the wind, their frail bodies and minimal strength. This was first in their maker, so it is also manifested in them, the created . . less found in humans nowadays.

Just wondering how National Geographic can retrieve the "crittercams" they fitted on these two Tree Kangaroos. Would not mind viewing all crittercam documentations by National Geographic at all. Some amount of preparation and setting up to achieve their desired video had been done to complete this video we are looking at now. Well, it had to be done, thanks National Geographic. Having met and welcomed us from his golf car, we proceeded to the barn for Larry to meet Barbara where she would park the horse after giving some horse riding lessons. Somehow, I admire Barbara seeing for the first time how a woman can command a horse to obey her while maintaining a very loving and harmonious relationship - - and this horse was big!

Lorna too enjoyed herself being with “Bruiser” a huge white pup and a few horses with the guidance both from Larry and Barbara. I was a mere spectator and photographer to what was wonderfully transpiring that late morning. Btw, Lorna and I instantaneously fell in love with "Bruiser", we wanted to bring him home, a huge guard doggie and still yet a pup at that!

After a few months, we learned from Larry that "Bruiser" was beaten by a snake but is recuperating quite well.

Dear Readers,

I have recently added links of people, mostly in the field of the visual arts, who have been in the background but have been responsible for my growth and perhaps, maturity as a visual artist.

Like my favorite character in the Bible, Joseph Barnabas, these people are like Joseph Barnabas to me. Joseph was the unseen person behind the now known disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Led by the Holy Spirit, he was always there for the disciples to encourage them to continue preaching the gospel despite the many difficulties they were confronted with. He was always there to resolve conflicts even amongst the disciples. When things were smooth sailing, Joseph Barnabas would then disappear.

Unlike the twelve disciples, I do not consider myself known now, nor is this my motive in having this site, but I just want to give my sincere appreciation to those who have given me their unselfish support in many different ways, when I needed them most. There are still a lot of Joseph Barnabas/es in my life to whom I should be thankful, and if I fail to mention them, I am sure the good Lord will remunerate them even more. God bless.

Joseph reminds me of my folks, too - - who were very much like him. I call these people, the "Silent Disciples".

At the net, I was searching for one of the first artworks I did in 1965 while I was yet a 17 yr old art student at UP, and I wrote on the search box:

From the search, to my surprise, came out my artwork, The EVENT and a photo of my father. This was the very early work that started me painting for this was the entry (with my father's help) I submitted at the New York World's Fair amongst 60 world artwork entries. Walk-in viewers at the New York World's Fair Gallery voted for my artwork,"The EVENT" as the First prize winner of the World Literacy and Christian Literature International Art Competition / New York World's Fair, New York, NY, USA / 1965.

May the message of this early artwork, this Christmastime, continue to be with you and contribute to world peace. God bless.

I felt its bite, at first, but after having injected me its anti-coagulant, I couldn't feel it no more

I was about to test my new improvised close-up lenses shooting some ants when I felt a sharp tiny bite behind my right leg. It was an awkward position to video this tiny black & white striped mosquitoe but I thought that was my only chance to shoot close-up my most hated tiny enemies on this planet! Just recently, the grandma of my son's girlfriend suffered from mild "denge" but who fortunately was immediately brought to the hospital for a quick recovery. ~~~>:) glenn

Precious things come in small packages like this 1/8" inch cross between a skipper and the stealth bomber which amazing detail and design may be slightly seen thru my home-made macro-lens. An Oz UV Visual Artist Edd Aragon after seeing this skipper commented,

" awesome wing design of the fly, like a pair of black
rising sun jap flags! only in macro. thx glenn"

Together with the 1/16" of an inch red fly (?) and extremely tiny buds and shoots in the wild, a morning video-shoot after the 5 AM tennis, made my day. A tiny skipper, stealth bomber & "Bob Dylan's "Modern Times", how can we go wrong?

Out of God's Grace

A mysterious experience at dawn having waken up, perhaps, for a good reason. David, my son, was awakened too and witnessed this visual experience. This was a 3D experience and this 2D photo doesn't really capture the moment but merely gives you an idea.

I was somewhat suddenly awake, catching myself to have slept on my right side, the right side of my head on my pillow and saw this picture of Mary at first, then Jesus after a few moments.

It was nothing but a piece of scarf wrapped in plastic, remnants of scarves I designed for Ms. Billy Lim, lit by a ten-watt bulb serving as nite-light while we slept.

Strangely so, even at three in the morning, David, my 17-year old son was also awake and shared those precious moments with me deciphering the images presented to us. David's version was different. It was Jesus he saw first, then Mary. I then decided to take photos of this seemingly common but uncommon manifestations of Jesus and Mary.

At my Photos gallery (click from the menu), is the same photo rotated vertically to have a better view of the image(s). The unplugged electric fan's cord plug and the light that came from the night-light created the right eye shadow illusion, the forehead's frown lines and the hood if it was Jesus, or veil, if it was Mary. The nose, upper and lower lips are mere reflections of the nite-lite on the plastic wrap. The head is the scarf's bulk or mass outlining the entire head.

I entitled this little story as "Out of God's Grace" because I thought God has already left me since a lot of untoward incidents had been happening to me and my family these past months. Or, perhaps, he wants me to understand something, some painful but meaningful realizations.

Tagalog Pre-hispanic Handwriting & David

My Multiply.com correspondence with Wawi Navarroza, a multifaceted young visual artist, is the reason why we have these cyberpages of my research on "Filipino Phonetic-Syllabic Handwriting". I had to go back to the some stories behind for the readers to understand the significance of such exquisite handwritings, which topic got initiated upon Wawi's invite to a lecture on the Mangyan tribe.

This page I am writing about, right now, started just because of (David) my 11 year old son’s urgent desire to communicate solely with his intimate friends in school and avoid being understood by his other classmates who do not really belong to their “culture”. At first, it was my German book that he tried to learn and share with his friends but, proving to be too difficult and taking too long to learn, David thought of other ways to communicate which would not require so much study and research. He was starting to make his own drawings, alphabets and icons that may only be associated with his group, but finally stopped in desperation in achieving his goal and shifted his interest to “rock climbing’. Here're his leftovers and a few notes I did in Palawan and at the National Museum.

So far, I have not heard of any effort done by the government, nor any of our scholars of the vernacular or national dialect which is Tagalog, to digitally transform these original Tagalog Phonetic/Syllabic to digital icons that may have their applications to the present confused Filipino society. My experience tells me that truly, these original Pre-Hispanic alphabets can have their present applications for I had used this Tagalog handwriting to communicate with my ex-German wife, writing each other in Tagalog, English and German, for writing the sounds of any language with these Tagalog Phonetic/Syllabic Alphabets is what makes it work and be understood. David's Undecoded Alphabets

Unlike my father, David’s grandfather (now at the hospital in l.a.,CA, struggling with his life) , who writes much like the Mangyans with his diagonal and straight line handwriting, David and I opted to depart from the syllabic, phonetic writings of the Tagbanua tribe admiring the seemingly romantic, soft and rounded strokes of their handwriting. David’s ability to adapt the chosen syllabic symbols to his needs and eventually to my needs too, led to a new form of syllabic / phonetic writing which at the present moment, only David and I can understand. We’ve decided to call it an international form of writing because our revision from the Tagbanua’s handwriting may be used to write any international language or local dialect provided that they make sounds. David’s reluctance to share this with others, other than his close friends, has created a new conflict between us. Time will tell whether I can share this new handwriting with others for, at the moment, I am inclined not to disappoint David. The inscriptions featured here were the first syllabic writings David attempted to share with his group. He has done many more but likes this version the most. ”I kinda like it too.” If you are interested in learning it, please write to David for I know he’s bound to change his mind.

Tagalog Syllabic-Phonetic Writing

The single outstanding object recovered during the Calatagan excavations was an earthenware vessel with Tagalog syllabic writings on the shoulder. Although it is known that at least sixteen (16) different groups were literate in syllabic form of writing at Spanish contact, (the writing is of Indic origin probably brought in to the Philippines by the Bugis, (great traders from Celebes) this is the only object from a pre-Spanish archeological site with syllabic writing.

It had been hoped to include a translation of this script in the exhibit (an excellent translation has been provided by Prof. Guillermo Tolentino); however it was thought best to withhold publication of the translation until Prof. Tolentino and others have had more opportunity to study the text at length.

The translation, according to the National Museum will be included in a special publication. The vessel on which the writing is found is of the type of the earthenware found at Calatagan which has been name KAY TOMAS PLAIN, and was found with porcelains of the 14th and 15th centuries. Thus, the object may be dated from this period.

It was 1965 and I was 17 years old when my father, Rev. Ignacio P. Bautista, a Methodist minister, encouraged me to join an International Art Competition where submitted artworks were to be exhibited at the New York World’s Fair. Sixty world entries were submitted and visitors at the fair casually voted for the artwork they wished to win. I almost reached the ceiling of our house jumping for joy, when I received a registered “airmail” letter from World Lit-Lit & Christian Literature, United Methodist Church, that I had won the art competition.

Not too long since the announcement, I received a check and some boxes containing Christmas cards of my artwork, "The Event". I was never the same since then, and had carried on the same passion, with a few interruptions, to paint up to the present time. Below is a bit of text I submitted to suggest or guide the viewer as to what I had in mind when I worked on this award winning piece.

The UP Oblation, a pen and ink drawing preceded the Complete Poems of Dr. Jose Rizal Monument. Instead of letters or text, I made use of horizontal lines similar to the one we see on television. I made my own pens of different sizes, by cutting the pen's tip to determine its' width.

The Rizal Monument pen and ink drawing is composed of the National Hero's thirty-nine (39) poems and one song, "A Orillas del Pasig", translation into English by my late friend, Alfredo Veloso. This pre-photoshop pen & ink drawing was critically acclaimed by critics/writers like Alfredo Roces, Joe Guevarra and Teodoro Valencia.

The Rizal Pen & Ink Drawing was on exhibit, for about 6 years, at the Jose Rizal Shrine at Fort Santiago upon the request of Ms. Imelda Romualdez Marcos. I had to get it back for restoration. I worked on this pen & ink drawing daily for about two years and was briefly interrupted to rest my eyes upon my father's request. He then encouraged me to tour the Philippines for a brief respite, which I did, but just the same I came back with a lot of drawings I did of my travels, especially drawings and pastels I did of Sagada, a place about 7-8 hours from Baguio.

In the past, up to the present time, the government’s effort to ease the plight of the impoverished, especially the squatters area (now termed as informal settlers), proved to be futile. For it has not done its part in striking a balance between satisfying their need for shelter and the livelihood program to allow them to pay for their pre-given shelters. This does not yet include the unstoppable influx of more squatters after they hear about the governments program of building infrastructure shelters for them. This obvious cycle of events do take place because of the government’s inability to see the future outcome of present efforts they are doing. The present imbalance we are all experiencing now in the city centers and the nearby towns is a sign that no program in the past has really succeeded in confronting and solving this problem. The Arroyo administration’s sincerity in giving a solution to this problem is a good start, although a bit too late to have a quick solution to a big problem. We seem to have good leaders handling the housing problem, but great leaders as they are, they seem to have fallen into the same trap as the past have. The solution to this problem cannot come from constructing shelters for the poor within the city centers. It can only be solved if we build more communities outside the city centers, nearby towns and eventually in the remote provinces to absorb the imbalances caused by poor and shortsighted design.

We must implement a balanced community plan that can satisfy the needs of the Filipino people for the next generations to come. An independent program, a seemingly fast solution, that offers shelter that the poor can repay through livelihood projects is not really the answer. It is the answer for the politician’s need to get reelected when election time comes. Relocation of the poor, since President Marcos’ time, by constructing medium-rise tenement houses never works for the simple reason that Filipinos basically likes to touch ground and have their own garden where their children can play. These unoccupied tenement houses may as well be converted into business offices and offered to ambitious Filipino entrepreneurs for the original owners merely rent them out for an attractive fee and find another space to squat again. We need not go vertical yet in the old cities, but go horizontal to the tips of Jolo and Tumawini.

Only after we’ve achieved this can we cautiously go vertical in pre-located places. Most, not all, squatter-occupied areas must not be allowed to grow. If the landowners of squatter-occupied areas are willing to work out a program with the government or real-estate developers or with the private sectors or other agencies or countries, then a well-balanced community plan should be effected. However, if the landowners are unwilling to undertake any program, the government must help evict these squatters in favor of the landowners for the land to be used more properly for a better community-oriented project. The scanty government funds available for housing must be spent wisely on long range community plans and their immediate implementation through the help of the private sectors, other countries and international organizations willing to initially help “slow countries” make the first proper step in building well-planned and balanced communities. A more immediate plan must take effect in luring back the squatter elements to their respective provinces by building more of this well-balanced communities, where they really belong and contribute to the decongestion of our cities and, forming their own. The numerous universities’ fresh and talented graduates must go back to their places of origin and apply their honed skills in properly building their own versions of the ideal community for their own town mates and relatives. The present influx of rural elements to the cities will then be reversed if these programs are properly implemented and a more meaningful balance is achieved.

When planning for a community, the total fulfillment and well-being of the smallest Filipino must be first in the architect’s mind, intent and passion. The lack of funds to build such communities is not the culprit. The culprit is the lack of practical vision, focus and direction. Once given the chance to happen, the Grid Plan will allow us to make the first step in building the first ideal Filipino community.

These communities can only get infectious for them to be interpreted and incorporated into the varied and colorful customs and traditions of the multi-talented Filipinos. The inexhaustible natural talents and skills of Filipinos, (e.g.: long list of patent pending inventions of Filipinos taken advantage of by other countries) will have an effective venue once a pilot community such as I have envisioned is effected. The Grid Plan is the missing link that has not been given any chance at all in the past and at present as well. Let’s give it a try and pray that the good Lord will continue to give us the strength and the guidance to build this ideal Filipino community which is really a small version of the ideal community he envisions for us all.

Unconsciously, this perhaps was what guided Lorna, David and myself to somehow pursue this type of lifestyle in Imus, Cavite. Living in the town of Imus is like having a fresh start in life. It has not been easy but the amount of time, work and patience we’ve invested in this place, looking back after twelve years, is worth the try. New acquaintances with farmers and other professionals and craftsmen allow us to experience the cross-section of the Filipino society. People from all walks of life would knock at our door to either offer “taho” (soy bean flan), fish balls on a stick, “pan de sal” (bread for breakfast), accompanied by a home-made noisy trumpet, common plastic wares and Tupperware, cult or religion. Vendors carrying heavy objects as beds, four season mirrors, house wares and even services that they can perform right at your doorstep like umbrella repair, tools sharpening, shoe-shine, and many others. Folks here seem to have all the time in the world. Just say. . hi! . . to a farmer who is on his way to his farm and he will stop to even spend the rest of his day with you much more if you offer him something to intoxicate him with. I offer coffee instead, most of the time and something of Lorna’s baking experimentation for the day. Twelve years have passed hardly noticing it, just as my son David is about to reach the same for he was a baby when we got here. David enjoys both worlds for we also find time on weekends to visit our other place in BF Homes where people behave differently

I just finished taking digital photos of sketches that were drawn by an architect-friend Edgar Saban, bringing into plan my basic concept of an ideal community. Of course, this is tentative for my purpose is merely to elicit response from those who are willing to pitch in their ideas in helping us come up with a better concept-plan that would help bring positive changes in the community. The following photos are followed with a more formal concept-article that had started but have been revised by some professional friends like ABM Rod Morales (PAGCOR), Arch. Edgar Saban, Art Critic Cid Reyes and Mon Recto (President of LTFP). My special thanks to them for, at least, believing that my concept may perhaps work if given the chance and given attention to, by people who think less of themselves and who are in a position to help make it happen. We’ve somehow agreed that the article's title, should carry the word ideal for the simple reason that we all must really start from the ideal and not end achieving the ideal. In short, there really shouldn’t be compromises to achieve the ideal goal. At the same time, it also carries the word Filipino, thinking more of the present plight of the striving Filipinos. My short experience, after trying to make this concept-plan get started, tells me that this is really not an easy thing to do. This effort requires the cooperation of real-state developers, the government, the private sectors and most especially, the landowners.

However, the basic concept may immediately be implemented if the government believes in the plan. The government may come up with a policy that encourages real-state developers, rural and urban planners to seriously consider this well-thought of and caring Grid Plan. This tentative plan still allows changes, for a better plan to materialize. This may serve as a guideline for architects who may incorporate the concept into their designs for some specific and appropriate areas chosen for development. This concept is the missing link to make the past, present and future planning work for the improvement of the quality of our standard of living, and for the government system to work, for the benefit of all Filipinos, and vice-versa. This concept may never have been attempted and successfully done before. But, in a smaller scale, it worked in the past, during our Datu system. Then, a group called the “Babaylans” were composed of the cross section of society. This included the creative sector like poets, artists of both the plastic and the visual arts, engineers and architects and less refined representation of our present day professionals. It worked because the vision was a result of several consultations from all the different concerned sectors of society, respecting and incorporating their ideas into a plan, implementing them using their hearts, their minds and their inherent skills. This can likewise be achieved now, much more in this technological age where the gathering and implementation of ideas can easily be met with the aid of computers. A vision such as this is what makes a vision work for the good of all, for the creators are both the participants and the observers. This matter must not be left solely in the hands of real-state developers. It is a serious matter that should be conceived by the community, the only way to paint a beautiful Philippine landscape, like an artwork interaction?

Development has its price. But, if communities are planned and realized idealistically, can lead to better yield. People still need to see and feel some amount of freshness in life. Clean air and green surroundings. We can still do this with the rest of uncultivated large mass of land (I had seen from a Hewey chopper). The Grid Plan plan can help decongest our city centers. We can live harmoniously with the rest of the Filipino people and the world. The government’s problems with the rebels will automatically cease once the welfare of the families’ needs of the rebels are met. They are only fighting for the future of their children, for corruption and non-direction in government policies to stop. Joy and peace will never be felt in our native land until we have given direction and purpose for the smallest Filipino. I may have become a successful businessman and have everything I wanted in this world, but sees my neighbors miserable and hungry…. . would I be happy?

This concept takes into consideration the poor, the middle-class and the rich. All sectors of society will eventually benefit from the plan. If implemented successfully, there will no longer be a "poor" sector in the community. I have prepared a “fifty to a hundred hectare grid plan”, a good size for a pilot project, showing the locations where condensed versions of the virgin forest or marshlands, educational, agricultural, residential and commercial areas should be. Agricultural areas need not be a well-irrigated location because of recent breakthroughs in the agricultural approaches such as in “hydroponics'”, introduced and presently practiced in Israel and some parts of Europe. Well irrigated areas may not have any need of this but the use of modern techniques hastens quality and harvest ,although, both may be applied to their maximum advantage. The Grid Plan, as I call it, assumes that every spot in the Philippines will eventually be developed for its inhabitants, like what happened to a country like Germany and many other European and Western countries.

Realizing their mistakes, they have difficulties reinventing the system for they seem to have started a machine that they themselves cannot stop. In this post cold war era, unlike these technological countries, the Philippines still has the option to shift gears and do things ideally from the start, instead of following their footsteps. The Grid Plan allows rural and urban planners to strike a balance despite future progress in nationwide business, infrastructure and real-state development, for each module is a balanced plan that is part of the more complete and bigger plan. The Grid Plan will work because it is after the fulfillment of every individual and his chosen vocation as much as it is there to enhance the goals of present business communities. If this meaningful level is achieved in a small scale, and is eventually magnified to a global scale, humans can now dream further and start thinking about inhabiting the next possible planet instead of destroying our own. Availing of the Grid Plan, the individual need not step on one stone to get to the other but directly hones his chosen craft or vocation, for the system directly helps and guides him to fulfill his vocation. The Grid plan is a total concept that is not really alien to most Filipinos. There may be slight adjustments from their present practices, both in their culture and traditions. But with the proper guidance from the government, church-related institutions and the private sector, we can set a definite direction to strike a balance both in man’s own system and that of nature and man’s environment.

As the plan shows, the workers who would build such communities will temporarily live in dormitories. They will work on weekdays but will be with their families on weekends. Eventually, the plan will allow them to become part of the community. These self-sufficient communities will not only help ease the traffic in the city centers but will compliment the needs of the present business centers. These communities will further help speed up production.

By now, man has realized the mistakes he has done in the past. The “Fast Countries can help the “Slow Countries” put a stop to the mistakes they have committed in the past and redirect the “Slow Countries” to a better goal for the good of all. (to be continued)

While Glenn Bautista has devoted his entire creative imagination to the creation of ideal spaces, he is aware that real problems exist within the physical boundaries that contain his being and that of his family. Relief from the difficult and harsh situations in which most Filipinos’ lives can only be achieved by a truly concerted effort that breaks down traditional community policy. This is a personal cause to which Bautista has committed himself – at the creation of a practical vision that can turn the Filipino community not into an impractical arcadia but a source of inspired well-being for every Filipino. This comprehensive solution is proffered in the hope that adequate resources may be made available to consolidate the solution into a master plan, detailed and thoroughly researched, such that even the smallest Local Government Unit (LGU) could easily adapt it to their own particular situation.

If, or “kung” in Tagalog is a requisite to or almost synonymous with the words ideal or progress that indicates reaching an ideal goal. If what I write or dream about for our country and people happens, or had been achieved a long time ago, we wouldn’t be where we are now. We would be enjoying what the good life really offers for every Filipino soul. This may be wishful thinking, but I believe can make a lot of sense if taken seriously. We can still work hard and take out the if and make what I’m writing about a reality. I’m convinced that this is what the good Lord wants to happen for all of us to enjoy before He comes back to show us the other world that He promised. Or is the other world what we have yet to achieve and work hard for, or, will it be handed down to us, just like that, on a silver platter?

It all started, “this ideal community thing”, when I was yet a fresh graduate from the University of the Philippines. Then, I had the chance to visit some of the places in northern Philippines that made me realize the importance of agriculture, fishing, etc., and their role in shaping our communities. Together with my friend, Ed Nathan Drilon, a trader and a baritone to boot, we trekked the northern trails of mountainous Cagayan Valley and a series of places almost reaching the tip of Tumawini. This proved to be a rewarding experience for me, although a usual one for Ed. With towels around our heads to protect us from road-dust, we went on a cruise with an open “Volkwagen Sakbayan “ from smooth to rocky roads to river banks, just to get to our destinations in time for the harvest of the varied crops. . . corn, string beans and vegetables familiar to most Filipinos. Impressed with the richness of our soil and the abundance of food source produced by our diligent farmers and fishermen, I couldn’t help but dream of doing a drawing board plan, that will allow city folks to experience the same, by incorporating the agricultural aspect of rural life into the urban lifestyle. Combinations of agricultural, fish and shrimp ponds and other ventures normally done only in the provinces are enough to bring freshness and excitement into city life, within a grid-plan, I then imagined. The initial result is a tentative plan that may now be applied to minimize the present imbalance we are all now experiencing in the city centers and nearby towns.This plan and its application is necessary for it sets aside, once and for all, a balanced approach in catering to the communities’ immediate educational, commercial, agricultural, religious and cultural needs. I was with Nestor de Villa (Gines Soriano, in real life) shooting scenes around Morong, when i found this little boy standing on a "banka" (small boat) as if meditating about what was to come.

This film-song I made is about the plight of the "Filipino Child", or for that matter, the Filipino children roaming around the streets of most city centers in our country, the Philippines . . especially that of Metro-Manila where the Philippine government's main offices are located. This is a call for all Filipinos to unite to seriously help, care, and guide these children to become better citizens or even become the future leaders of this nation.

The 3-month effort to make the longer version of this video ended in a letdown after my pc crashed. This effort, a make-do film is only to remind me that I tried making a long video in the past, in my small way. Lyrics, rendition, composition, arrangement, guitar, keyboard are all by yours truly. "A ten-minute video excerpt from a one-hour documentation of a drama of sacrifice exemplified by two ants making their frail bodies as bridges for the rest of the other ants going about their chores for the day. Handheld, I couldn't keep up videographing with the patience and determination of these two ants who after performing their roles were brought up by a sympathizer ant via the tiny twig, perhaps to rest, to again perform the same task for the next days to come. I caught this particular scene at the start of this video after the first ant performed the sacrificial task for 30 minutes . . a touching experience, I must admit which reminded me a bit of what Christ did for men. Do test your patience too by finishing watching this incredible feat of two ants hanging on to a twig despite the wind, their frail bodies and minimal strength. This was first in their maker, so it is also manifested in them, the created . . less found in humans nowadays."
